Joseph 'Joe' Willis (Pronouns: They/Them/’Our Kid’) is Queer, Yorkshire Genre Writer whose work examines the offbeat permeating the everyday. They use elements of Northern realism, the gothic and a bittersweet, gently humorous tone to explore themes of non-conformity, community and self-discovery. Like a surrealist Alan Bennett.
Their original spec scripts have led to them being chosen for the following schemes: BBC Writersroom Northern Voices, BBC Children’s Voices, Screen Yorkshire Flex, XR Stories Residency Labs and BAFTA Connect.
They have written for BBC Comedy Series The Amelia Gething Complex, had two horror comedy short films funded by the BFI Network and their sitcom pilot ‘It’s My Party’ produced as part of Sky Studios Table Reads. They currently have comedy projects in development with Candle and Bell and drama projects with PDA and Tyke Films.
They also regularly script edit/mentor for the BFI Network Script Labs and previously ran Les Enfants Terrible Award nominated Danse Macabre Productions, producing and writing genre plays for the Edinburgh Fringe, London Horror Theatre Festival, Crucible Theatre and The Pleasance.
